If you’re thinking about playing Albion Online for the first time or hopping back in but are worried it doesn’t have a healthy player base, you’ve come to the right place. The biggest worry of any MMO player is the game shutting down due to dead servers or a lack of players to do content with, but Albion Online players luckily don’t have that problem. Here’s a quick look at the Albion Online player count and whether or not it’s worth it to play Albion Online in 2023.
Albion Online Current Player Count
For the longest time, Albion Online had a single server that everyone all over the world played on. As you can imagine, this resulted in some pretty heavy ping differences depending on where you were in the world, but the devs did an excellent job of mitigating this for the most part.
In March of this year, Sandbox Interactive (SBI) finally released Albion East, a server for players closer to Eastern Asia than Albion West, located in Washington, D.C. With its release, Albion saw a massive influx of players trying out the new servers now that they could play with a lower ping on their own servers.
SBI released some player stats less than a month after opening the server to the public, and players were happy to hear that Albion had broken their all-time player record and surpassed 300,000 active users on April 2nd. This puts it on par with other big MMOs out there, but obviously still isn’t as large as giants like Diablo 4, World of Warcraft, or Runescape.
Since then, there has been a slight drop in players, but if the Steam charts are anything to go off of, the player count is still healthy. SBI doesn’t regularly publish how many users are on mobile or their standalone client, but using SteamCharts, we can see how many players the game regularly sees on Steam.
Looking at the above image, we can see a 24-hour peak of about 14,000 players, with an average of about 10,000 for the month of July. Remember, this is just on Steam and does not include the standalone client that existed for years before the Steam release and the thousands of mobile players. Accounts created outside of Steam are not cross-compatible, meaning that there are thousands of OG players still using the standalone client to play Albion.
SBI often mentions that Steam is a small fraction of their overall player base, meaning that the true number of active daily players is much higher. It would not be surprising to hear that Albion regularly sees around 50,000 active players each day, which is definitely enough to have a healthy MMO population. Unfortunately, like most MMOs, SBI doesn’t publish exact numbers for their average player count, so we can only guestimate.
Is it worth it to play Albion Online in 2023?
Yes, 100%. It is definitely worth it to play Albion Online in 2023. This is coming from a player that has had an account since 2016, back when you had to purchase a pack in order to play it. Now, it’s free-to-play, and you have nothing to lose but a few hours of your time by giving it a go. The servers feel more alive than ever, they’re getting better at optimizing content and ensuring that gear remains somewhat balanced, and it’s insanely easy to get into the action quickly.
They continually update the game and release patches to address any possible balance issues or bugs. There is new content all the time, with the most recent big one being the addition of The Mists, a place for players to gather resources or duke it out without the possibility of getting 5v1’d and losing before the fight even starts.
