SpongeBob SquarePants’ Bikini Bottom seems like nothing more than your typical cartoon setting with anthropomorphic animals. But there’s a suspicious amount of nuclear explosion references made throughout the show, like mushroom clouds, nuclear waste, and mutations. It really makes you wonder—is the show pointing to something more?
Well, it probably is. With so many nods and a name shared with a nuclear testing ground, SpongeBob Squarepants is our unwitting first introduction to how colonialism and complete disregard for human life sucks.
